The booziest suburb

The Sydney suburb of Killara, known for its well-groomed, old-money style, also has the dubious honour of being home to the nation’s biggest spenders on booze. According to research and marketing outfit Comintel, one of the census collection districts in Killara spent the most amount per head on alcohol over the festive season. There are about 900 people legally allowed to buy alcohol in the district and Comintel estimates each one shelled out $570 on alcohol in December. The company got to that number by crunching income and expenditure details for those who live in the area and national and seasonal spending patterns on alcohol. “If converted to beer and wine, it would be about eight slabs of beer and two dozen bottles of Koonunga Hill Shiraz,” says Greg Thompson, Comintel managing director. Given the quantities of booze they may have consumed, whether residents have been throwing parties, knocking back shots at the pub or enjoying hefty tipples at home, Thompson reckons the chance of them remembering much of it is thin.
