What was your first job?

I was a bank teller; I lasted about a year before making a quick transition into the shipping industry.

What’s your top tip for managing a business?

Have a really good hiring process! Working with the right people makes all the difference in your business. I use a couple of head hunters who aren’t just professional acquaintances but are personal friends – and that’s really the key. I’ve also got a really good gut for hiring people and working with a motivated and passionate team has allowed us to be where we are today.

Where do your best ideas come from?

The best ideas are born from connected teams – collaboration between co-workers that actively listen to their customers and partners.

What keeps you up at night?

Opportunity. Which one to take. We’ve got a fabulous team, a really strong brand, certainly in Australia and the APAC region, so from my side of the fence it’s just opportunity. There are so many great opportunities out there; which countries should we go after, which verticals should we expand into in certain markets. However, we have a really healthy business, so it’s not a bad problem to have.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Hire ahead of the curve.
