Apps to help you enjoy the Olympics

Via Forbes and Gizmodo come a few suggestions of handy mobile apps for Android and iPad that diehard Olympics fans, or even the more casually interested among us, could find handy over the next two weeks.

These are just a taste of the myriad Olympic’s oriented packages floating around the various app stores offered by the world’s mobile titans, but it’s a good place to start.

OFFICIAL LONDON RESULTS APP

Both Forbes and Gizmodo agree this is a must have app. It’s from the London Organising Committee and is Android and Apple’s iOS friendly. This app runs the gamut of Olympics-related information, from results to live updates, schedules, details of sports and lists of athletes, complete with biographies.

LONDON 2012 CALENDAR

This Android app is initially aimed at the 2012 London Olympic Games, but hopes to be around for future events. According to the app’s blurb, events can be listed chronologically as a complete list from first to last, or by discipline.

MEDALS 2012

Want a medal tally in your pocket? This free app pledges to deliver “instant access” to the number of gold, silver and bronze medals each country has one, along with times and dates for all the finals. It’s free and available for iOS and Android. Potential users be warned, people who’ve downloaded this one for Android have given it just 2.2 stars out of 5, so it may not be right for you.

REUTERS OLYMPICS LONDON 2012

If all you want is pictures, Reuters may have the app for you. This free software is only available for iOS and it promises “the best live Olympics photos & moments captured by Reuters award-winning photographers”.

FACEBOOK OLYMPICS PAGE

Ok, so it’s not an app but Facebook’s Olympics page is pretty spiffy. It has loads of details on athletes, teams and events, complete with links to competitor and team pages where supporters can go to talk about results and show their support. For Aussies in the spirit of things, the official Australian Olympic Team page is here.
