Industry pundits are all but certain Apple will take the wraps off the latest member of its wildly-successful iPhone family on September 12 after invites were sent out for a special event in San Francisco.

But some are still hedging their bets after the technology titan caught many would-be experts out last October when it took the covers off the iPhone 4S, not what many had predicted would be the 5.

The invite Apple set out to the US media features the number 12, casting a shadow in the shape of the number 5, saying “It’s almost here”. The time and date for the event is the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts on September 12 at 10am Pacific time (3am on September 13 AEST).

The Yerba Buena Center is the traditional home of major Apple product launches and is where it unveiled the latest iPad in March.

The Australian Financial Review will live blog the September 12 event.
