To consider Dan Murphy’s for the top award, two of the BRW and AMP Capital Shopping Centres Outstanding Retailer of the Year Awards judges had to be recused. Roger Corbett and Naum Onikul had both previously worked at Woolworths and had been involved in the original purchase of the liquor chain.

However, once they had left the room, the ruling was unanimous, Dan Murphy’s was quite simply the best retailer in Australia, the judges held – here’s why:

PRICE: The judges admired the retailer for its low price strategy but noted that it had invested substantially in educating its customers up the value chain. So while customers came in to buy their normal drop, they would find live tastings of other more expensive options.

PRODUCT: The judges raved about its wide range of product, noting that the store stocked a good selection of overseas product that could be difficult to find elsewhere.

SERVICE: Most of the judges had shopped at the store and noted a level of first-class service that made it easier to buy more.

ONLINE: The judges particularly recommended its online offering as a strong complement to its physical stores.
