For the past few years Australians have been fed a steady diet of tales of FIFO fortunes being made out on the ore seams of WA and Queensland.

But it seems that anyone looking for an employer to love should head to Sydney.

Melbourne IT services group OBS topped the list of Australia’s 50 best employers for 2012. But 13 of the remaining companies in the top 20 came from Sydney, together with three from Melbourne, two from Queensland and one each from the ACT and WA.

Of the 50 employers on the full list, NSW accounted for over half, with 29, followed by Victoria with 12 and Queensland with five. Of the NSW entries, resources industry superannuation group, Auscoal, from Warners Bay in the Hunter district, was the only entry from outside Sydney.

Data storage outfit NetApp topped the NSW entries at No.2, while Queensland’s first entry was education and training group MRWED from Morayfield, at 16. The ACT’s sole entry was seventh-ranked professional services group Cordelta, while WA’s top-rated employer, Dale Alcock Homes, made the list at No.20 as the state’s sole entry in the top 50.

South Australia, meanwhile, had Nova Aerospace at 32 and community services group Re-Engage Youth Services from Christies Beach at 43.
